We are lucky to have a significant Viking heritage site on our base. An old Viking grave dated to the year 779 was partially excavated by archaeologists in the 1990s. More recent analysis has suggested that this grave could be one of the most important Viking graves in Norway, and is thought to contain the oldest know sailing ship in Scandanavia. The municipality have recently started the application process to list the grave as a Unesco world heritage site. You can read more about this here:

This illustrates that our location has been a centre for maritime activity for more than a thousand years! The Vikings understood well that our strategic sheltered location, where the Karmsund is narrow, means that all ships must pass. Today, on the busiest shipping route in Norway, more than 30.000 ships pass by each year. We are proud to continue the tradition started by the Vikings.
